Are You Keeping a Good Skin Care Routine?

Skincare is challenging for some with all the countless products available and the buzz around the ten or more step skincare routines. In reality, however, no one really ever starts their skincare journey with ten steps. A great skincare routine usually starts with three to four basic steps until you can figure out your specific skincare needs.

At Griffith Dermatology in Knoxville, TN, our dermatologists, Dr. Robert C. Griffith and Dr. Robert D. Griffith, offer consultations to help you build the best skincare routine to fit your individual needs. In the meantime, to help build and maintain a skincare routine, start with these basics.

Cleansing

A cleanser with a low pH will help wash off excess oil and dirt buildup on your face. When choosing a cleanser, make sure that the pH is at least below seven to preserve your skin’s natural acidity. Take note that standard soaps will be very drying to your skin since they have a pH of nine or higher.

Moisturizing

If you live in a hot climate, opt for lightweight gel formulations and heavier cream-based products if you live in a colder climate. Essentially, moisturizing will make your skin softer and prevent wrinkles. To further lock in moisture and all the skin-loving ingredients of your moisturizer, you can also apply facial oil on top of the moisturizer.

Sun Protection

Look for a sunscreen that has an SPF of 30 or higher and apply it to all exposed skin, even if it’s not sunny outside. Sunscreen is your best bet to ward off various signs of premature aging. It also helps prevent premature wrinkles and lines and offers protection against UV rays that cause skin cancer.

Exfoliating

While daily cleansing really helps clean gunk buildup, to really clean your skin, you will have to exfoliate. Exfoliating helps combat clogged pores, whiteheads, blackheads, and acne. Exfoliants come in physical scrubs and chemical scrubs, but you should consult your dermatologist in Knoxville, TN, to determine the right one for you, especially if you have sensitive skin.

The steps above will suffice for most people since they cover all the essentials of skincare. It could take multiple products and trial and error to determine the most effective ones for you. If you have specific skin conditions or concerns, such as preventing wrinkles, always listen to your dermatologist’s advice to avoid side effects.
